Okay, did you guess? No? Well here you go:

The owner was wearing a Porsche-branded jacket and cap.

I'd also accept; he was a man and in his 60's.

Yeah it is pretty funny. Guys buy expensive fast cars that they think will attract women but usually they don't. This is especially true of performance cars with familiar shapes. An M3 isn't that distinguishable from a regular 3 Series if the girl isn't a gearhead. This became especially true when BMW started the whole M Sport line. And a 911 looks like a 911, so there are a lot of them out there. I live in a section of So Cal where neither of these cars get many looks. Which is kind of nice for me since I have both and I can commute without getting attention.

If a guy wants to attract non-gearhead women he needs to buy something that is rare and looks exotic. A fugly Ferrari 360 Spider can be had around here for less than a new Carrera S and get a lot more attention. Most girls won't care that it's not as fast as the Porsche. Even though I don't like how the 360 looks I sometimes think I should have got it instead of my 997 and E90 M3, lol.

Kinja'd!!! Lets Just Drive > Manuél Ferrari

Disagree.

I own a Mustang, and I get more compliments from non-car people then folks in proper performance cars. You don't need rare, but exotic helps. Really, it comes down to the presence of the vehicle, regardless of how an enthusiast feels about the car.

Tell you what, though; park my Mustang next to an M3 and by a bunch of girls and I assure you, they'll be more interested in the Mustang then they will be with the generic looking 3 series.

I get your point, I really do, I just think it can be done without being rare, and even without being exotic.

That said, I get it. I think the S197 Mustangs (pre-facelift) are some of the most beautiful mustangs since 1973.

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > Lets Just Drive
10/18/2013 at 19:37

Kinja'd!!!1

I have never owned a Mustang. I think what helps it is that a Mustang only looks like a Mustang. It may share parts with other cars but it doesn't share its bodywork with other Fords.

Also I think it depends a lot on location and the color of the car. Until recently I was living in Newport Beach. There are so many high end cars there that no M3, Mustang, 911 or Corvette will get a second look. You literally see at least one Ferrari and Bentley every single time you drive down PCH.

Now that I'm living 15 minutes inland there are still fancy cars, but not as many. Where I am now a sporty car doesn't have to be expensive to get looks or comments, but it does need to be a bright color. My cars are black, white and grey and they rarely get looks. But I've been in bright colored cars and everyone makes comments. Porsche gave me a new red Boxster S as a loaner when my car was in for service and the whole world loved it. Everyone would come up and make positive comments about it in parking lots, whereas my black 997 rarely ever gets noticed.

What color is your car?

Outside of Mustang people, little kids and people (men and women) who aren't that car saavy, most Mustangs don't earn a second glance. But among those kids, Mustang enthusiasts and the uninitiated they stand out because everyone knows what they are and there's a perception among those same groups that Mustangs are "good cars" or "muscle cars" etc.

Nice. I like that body style in black. A guy that used to work for me had the same car with an MT. He commuted in an hour of stop and go (mostly stop) traffic each way to work so he sold it. But he loved the Mustang so much that he bought another black one, but with an AT.

BTW I forgot to say - that Boxster S was a total hoon mobile. It didn't only get looks while parked, it got looks on the road when I get the back end out.

I had test driven the prior gen Cayman S and it didn't seem as tail happy. But the new Boxster/Cayman S "feel" like they got bigger power bumps than they did. It's so easy to get the tail out now that it's silly.

Mine is also a manual. I prefer to row my own and won't spend money on a car in which I can't.

This is just me, but I've never bought into the excuse that an automatic is acceptable if you're commuting. If you're driving a car, you're commuting, weather it's from the start/finish line on the track, or from home to work and back - it's all commuting thus if the excuse that an automatic is okay in these situations, then why not all?

Save The Manuals!

Guys, come on.

The horrible reality is that during our best years we can't afford to have mid-six figure, summer only, 2 seater sports cars - and by the time we do, we just wish we were young enough again to properly enjoy them.

And old people love logos.

I think it's the type of commuting that matters. Manuals are way more fun when the commute has no traffic or some traffic. This guy's commute was just awful. He only had one route and it was a parking lot every day.

Traffic is getting so bad here that it's killing the fun of driving. I moved closer to work this year literally to save myself from turning into a person that hates driving. Driving is fun again, and it's awesome.

Mind if I ask? Where do you live?

One of my very best friends, you can meet him and his car here , has an automatic (which he's tuned the heck out of) as he has a horrible commute to and from work also. I give him a hard time about it because I'm a hard-line row-your-own kind of guy but the truth is that there are absolutely some amazing automatic and manual automatic transmissions out there and while it's not to my taste, I'll still bust balls in the name of good fun.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

And having said all of that, when the wife and I upgrade there's a good chance that, if we end up with the ATS (hopefully V) I'll option the manual automatic but not if we end up with a nicely used CTS-V (which she's already agreed to, because wagon and current-prices are in budget).

You should check out the Mazad6 review. That one got under a few peoples skin, because they bought Mazda6's.

The beauty of being a Mustang owner is you don't get upset when people talk down about Mustangs. It's not a car for the thin of skin. Having said that, I have some friends and acquaintances who simply won't hear anything negative about their cars, they simply refuse to accept that their car is anything but the best car. Regular Cars loves taking on those projects, because its kind of like a big fuck you and calm down, rather then genuine hate.

Sure, I don't mind answering. I live in northern Orange County, in CA. I don't mind saying which city, but I'd rather tell you over a private message (but can't find a way to do that with Kinja, is there one?). I know I'm being paranoid thinking that thieves troll these posts looking for targets. But who knows, someone could see from my posts that I have multiple high end cars and work a lot and try to find my house while I'm at work... I may have posted some pics to Oppo that had my house in the background so it might be doable to find it if the person knew which city it was in.

Your friend has a sick ride. The SS is such a beast. Since he likes big V8s he should buy a used Benz C63 or E63 one day. That way you won't be able to give him a hard time since Mercedes doesn't make MTs anymore :)

A CTS-V wagon would be awesome. ATS V would be nice too. My buddy just got the ATS 2.0 with a MT. He's pretty stoked on it. Every time I see his car I like it more and more. The exterior styling really grows on you after a while.

The only thing that bothers me is when people call my car cute because that means they don't get it at all. I'll be the first to admit that it's not the best hot hatch on the market, but I think it's the most fun and it's the one for me (it's also pretty cheap).

I spent some time with an ATS 2.0 MT and I love the car. Since that article, and briefly before, I've had some more seat time with the car. I'm madly in love with the CTS-V, because wagon. And the truth is, even if it's more expensive new versus a used CTS-V, I'd be all over an ATS-V Sportwagon but, well... that's extremely unlikely. Which is a shame, because I'd love to have a 3-series estate competitor from GM. Hah.

I'm really impressed with the ATS. The 2.0 T makes enough power, the chassis is firm yet comfortable and the steering is precise. That said, I'm not a huge fan of the manual option and though loath to admit, I actually prefer the other option. It's one of maybe two areas where, in my humble opinion, the ATS falls short of the Bimmer - the BMW Getrag is a better manual. The other area, sadly, is rev-range and engine note. For me, however, the way the engine pulls isn't a big deal and it would be fixed, or at least hidden, by a slightly more aggressive engine note. I'm not talking exhaust here, but induction and kaboombustion.

In the car, you know it's not a BMW, but for the price difference it honestly feels like you're getting a better deal, a better relative value for your dollar. There is one thing, however; I hate. It's CUE. Now, I know I'd get used to it but the initial experience is frustrating.

I know, I'm echoing the web journo's. Probably has a lot to do with the material I'd read and reviewed before driving the car and the limited seat time I've had but you tend to focus on things when you think they're the focus of focusing. Hah.

Still, it's my pick in the demographic.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

I have to admit to a bias. I've been in love with the ATS for a long time, pretty much since I first fell for the CTS-V. Difference is, while I'd be hesitant to buy a non-V CTS, I'd be happy with a non-V ATS with the 2.0T and performance package options.

Kinja'd!!!

Note: Shit Eating Grin behind wheel of CTS-V coupe (first time in a CTS-V of any kind).

This black diamond package Sportwagon was the other, only it wasn't on a show floor and it had the keys in. Big grin.

I hope this isn't too offensive or mind blowing, but here we go...

... your car is cute. And the fact that you think people should think differently makes me think that you don't get it. Like, for example, my V6 Mustang get's called cute and I'm not like, "You guys just don't get it." Now, you may not think the logic plays the same, but it does indeed. Your car is a cute car made mean. Mine was a "mean" car made cute by it's V6. Two sides of the same coin, really. I promise.

But here's the thing; you need never be offended by the fact that you have a cute car, no more than I. Why? Because people love cute cars. The small group of gear-heads who really know their shit, they may call it cute in an attempt to deride the cool factor of your car but you need to own that shit. You need to be like, "Yeah motherfucker, it's cute. Now how many times did you get pulled over on that last leg?"

Cute has its advantages. Cute is invisible to cops. Cute is impossible to ignore if you're a chick. Cute gets you nods of approval and waves to, "... go ahead, friend." Cute appeals to a wider variety of people, fuck the six guys you might see in a week with big V8's trying to knock your shit.

Cute is good.

Cute keeps it's value and sells well down the road. Cute isn't offensive, it won't turn anyone off.

Cute, my friend, is either a term of endearment or the bitter pitch of jealousy.

Cute is for the win.

I second your take on Cue. I've driven his car and it's god awful. It's not just awful. You have to say God first. It's so bad it's dangerous to use while driving. Just changing the radio volume is difficult. Hopefully a firmware update will solve the issue for my friend and other first gen ATS owners.

Dat CTS V you posted is the business. Black with yellow calipers is the way to go. Get that car if you can stomach the fuel usage. Big V8 and no Cue = Amazing

The wife has said yes... yes, in the next two years. The same, however, is true for the ATS. Since we're about to become parents, and neither of us is willing to have a parents-mobile, she's totally okay with the wagon, four doors and so on and she likes that it's still RWD monster for me. Insurance and fuel, I budget.

That said, even at $35-$45K, a used CTS-V is going to have miles and no warranty while the ATS will have a warranty and no kilometers.

10/19/2013 at 04:05

This is how I would justify a used CTS V - a giant blown V8 isn't as stressed under normal driving as a small turbo charged 4 cylinder. The V8 laughs at public roads and existing mileage. A used one should last as long or longer than a new ATS engine.

Is that true? I dunno. But that's how I talked myself into a used E90 M3 instead of a new 335i :)

The (I thought obvious) implication being that Porsche guys were slim not because they didn't eat, but because of what they ate, i.e. the dust of Corvettes. It's a friendly jab at Porsches and their owners , suggesting that they're slower than Corvettes, a reference to the longstanding power deficiency of most Porsches compared to their Corvette contemporaries. Of course the complete truth is more complex and nuanced, but that's not really the point of a humorous barb.

Aha. See, I read that as a jab at Corvette owners; I played along with the stereotype with the "Corvette guys fart dust" comment suggesting they're a bit closer to AARP membership than they'd like to admit. At any rate, well played.
